Who is she?

Drew Tanaka is a crazy rich Asian demigod, born of Aphrodite and Ken Tanaka, CEO of Tanaka Industries.

She grew up believing she was an only child. The girl always felt somewhat empty and always had a longing for something that felt missing in her and she mistook that for the absence of her father and later found out she was missing a twin brother she had been separated from since they were toddlers. She always craved attention from her father who was focused on his business dealings after a heartbreak from Aphrodite. Her father worked hard to make sure his family survived, continuing to build and expand the business into what became a large multinational group of companies that began with precious metals and jewelry and grew into the industrial metals, and real estate and resort estate chains, all for the future of his children. The attention he should have given Drew (or his twin children) was later replaced with luxuries and material things and little time spent with her.

As a young Asian ‘it girl’ in New York, she aspired to become a famous model and fashion icon to which her father brushed aside. To him, family and the future were more important than chasing one’s passion. Ken Tanaka believed now that his child(ren) should not have to work. Who knew, later on, he would believe that they should take responsibility for the future of the company instead.

Drew was only ten years old when she schemed to get her father’s attention by plotting her own fake kidnapping - only to be chased by telkhines. One of her au pairs, Kimmy, turned out to be her protector and Drew was brought to Camp Half-Blood to train when she was not enrolled at the prep school, Brooklyn Academy for the Gifted.

Years later, Drew found out and was reunited with her twin brother, Luke. Together they were supposed to be the future of The Tanaka Industries, one way or another.

Drew possessed the usual Aphrodite gifts such as fluency in French, Amokinesis and Beauty Magic and Radiation. But she was also given a rare gift of Charmspeak.

Combat and Fighting

Drew was never one to take part in combat or fighting. But she could defend herself if she wanted to. As a child, she learned Karate after watching Mulan. She was good at it and hoped that this would somehow impress her father and get his attention, but after he missed all her demos and competition meets, she quit.

She learned sword fighting in camp, but she is not as brave or good as her sister, Silena or her brother, Luke. She was also scared of getting any kind of scars.

Years of training in Camp Half-Blood during summers led her to learn to be more resourceful with what she could use on her person since swords weren’t always something fashionable to keep (not everyone has a weapon that changes from the form of a pen,) so she learned to weaponize hairpins and a hand fan other than the accessories she always had like the chain from her Chanel bag. She also has knives
that were hidden in the heel of shoes her twin brother made and gave her for Christmas, which she values and has kept as a prized possession.

With a mostly absent father, Aphrodite had Eros leave behind a teddy bear which Drew later named Alfred to watch over her and keep her company. Drew has a childhood fondness for teddy bears, especially the ones she’s grown up with. Having spent her childhood with little friends and little attention from her father, the teddy bears just showed up one year and became her only friends.

Drew was homeschooled until the age of ten and was rarely allowed to go out; after being sent to Camp Half-Blood, she demanded to attend a regular school.

Drew used to get teased for being the only student whose parents or parent would constantly be absent for all school functions. In fact, on one of many occasions, Drew had given a student lipgloss that was actually filled with superglue when the other started spreading rumors, and she used her charmspeak to getaway with it.

Drew knew the other children before did not like her, being quite different from the rest; she had unknowingly used charmspeak on the kids at her mortal school to be her friend.

~ Drew unknowingly used charmspeak on her teachers and tutors. She often used her power when she learned from camp that she had the ability to get her way and to defend herself.

Drew’s Secrets, Trapped

Who said being a child of Aphrodite and being a crazy rich asian demigod would be all glitz and glamour?

One of Drew’s many secrets, something only her closest friends would know, was that a life choice was made for her and she wanted out. Zeus arranged for Aphrodite to marry Hephaestus without having a choice — and Drew seemed to share this same parallel fate with her mother.

Some days before she plotted her fake kidnapping — her father, Ken Tanaka, introduced another demigod near her age, Collin Young, as he met with one of his business partners, Nick Young, — jokingly suggested that one day their companies would merge and they (Drew Tanaka and Collin Young) would be the ones to seal the deal. Nick Young had ulterior motives to slowly scam money from the Tanakas through one of the business deals.

Drew was too young to understand any of it and she was focused on getting her father’s attention to tell him what she wanted to be when she grew up. Her actions along with 'suggestions from Nick' , later on, convinced Ken Tanaka to send Drew to Camp Half-Blood to train and keep her safe until such time, she would be old enough to take on the family’s responsibility and push through with the family dealing.

Fast forward to the day she found out everything wasn’t just some joke.

Affiliations and Relationships

Drew and Luke Tanaka
While Drew always thought she was an only child, she always felt like there was a huge hole in her heart and this was not because she was missing love or a soulmate. She thought it was mostly because she lacked a relationship with both Aphrodite and Ken Tanaka, but actually, it was because she was separated from her twin brother, Luke Tanaka, from a very young age.

Perhaps it was because their father was also separated from his own sister or he simply could not handle having two special demigods under one household while managing his business for his children’s future. The truth - they were separated as children because Ken Tanaka and Aphrodite were convinced by Eris that a parallel fate would affect the Tanaka twins which would hurt them both.

By the time Drew found out and was reunited with Luke, she initially did not know how to react given her indifference with her half-siblings. But she learned that now, she did not have to fight through the challenges she faced alone.

Drew Tanaka and Jinan Elias
Drew promised Luke that she wouldn't date any more of his friends. But she grew to be close and best friends with Jinan, a free-willed son of Dionysus, who traveled the world and ran his own vineyard and winery. He and her twin brother, Luke Tanaka had a close relationship from traveling together. Jinan and Luke had helped each other at some point and more than often claim that they had raised each other. Jinan had also been around to support Drew, even as she ran away from her own personal troubles. From best friends - the two developed and realized they had feelings for each other and skipped the dating phase entirely. They are currently engaged.

Drew Tanaka and Daewi Han
Dae is another one of Luke's friends, a Roman son of Janus. Drew and Dae/Tae started off as frienemies who more than often just teased each other or got on each other's nerves. She would often 'forget' his names on purpose.

Drew realized he was starting to see through her masks and they ended up talking to each other and hanging out more. She considered him to be her first love. Dae often took Drew on random trips to Paris to get French Macaron and shop with his ability to travel through doors.

While Drew believes she’s broken many hearts, she completed her Aphrodite Rite of Passage by breaking Dae’s heart, to see if he would fight for her even if she was arranged to marry someone else. This caused her own heartbreak since she never expected to fall for the son of Janus and sadly, he did not fight for her.

Drew Tanaka and Collin Young
Drew and Collin have an odd relationship. She would see the other demigod occasionally because their fathers worked closely together. Drew was being arranged to marry the son of Tyche as part of a 'business deal' which later fell apart after Drew and Luke were able to foil the real motives of the Youngs.

At a young age, Collin had given Drew an enchanted mirror to spy on her and her father - giving Nick Young the idea of twisting Drew's scheming to their advantage.

Drew Tanaka and Nico Di Angelo
Drew and Nico have a unique and unlikely friendship as both demigods were easily misunderstood. Drew, a keen observer, understood how Nico must be feeling in Camp Half-Blood as she herself, often isolated herself from her half-siblings and other people. She didn't let many people get too close to her for fear of losing them much like she lost one of her half-siblings and another close friend. She had family and abandonment issues with a mostly absentee father and apparently, a long-lost twin brother.

Nico was one of the few other demigods, Drew allowed to get close to her and see through her masks.

Drew Tanaka and Luke Castellan
Drew was mostly close to just a handful of demigods. Drew longed for companionship as she thought she was an only child and she often hung around Silena Beauregard and Luke Castellan. She looked up to Luke as an older brother figure, especially since they shared similar daddy issues and godly parent issues - although Drew still had a good relationship with Aphrodite.

Drew had always looked up to her half-sibling Silena. She was almost the poster child for a child of Aphrodite.

She was beautiful.
She was skilled even in fighting.
She had the perfect boyfriend - even if he was a child of Hephaestus.
She believed so much in love.

But seeing Silena sad over some past with Luke Castellan and heartbroken when she found out her boyfriend had passed made Drew believe that perfect love was unattainable.

Drew called Silena a traitor, not because she had known she had close ties with Luke as an unintentional spy. She called Silena a traitor because she promised she would never leave her siblings behind.

Drew Tanaka and Piper McLean
Drew was seen as the very stereotype of a petty shallow, mean girl daughter of Aphrodite. That’s what everyone thought, so that’s the image Drew kept up for her own protection.

When the Native American arrived at camp, Drew noticed that something was wrong but she could not quite pinpoint what it was. Overhearing the other girl hoping that she wasn’t a child of Aphrodite and thinking that being one was useless struck a nerve - especially when McLean claimed she wasn’t “like the other girls.”
Drew saw through McLean’s mask which caused the Asian to not trust the girl.

Other than that, Drew disliked Piper McLean for having some seemingly perfect relationship with her father. McLean had the attention of her father, Tristan McLean, and of Aphrodite - and this added to the Asian’s insecurities because these were things she didn’t have for herself

Before attending Camp Half-Blood, (Headcanon: Drew only received the counselor position after Silena Beauregard's passing, being the eldest present at that time in camp, though she was really young. There were other children of Aphrodite who were older than her, except they no longer attended camp. Drew is the same age as Annabeth)

Drew had been out with her father, Ken Tanaka, waiting for their car to be brought out by the chauffeur. It was a rare occasion that the girl had been out with her father and on that occasion, they were supposed to meet the Youngs. Nick Young and his only son, Collin, a demigod son of Tyche; were part of another affluent Asian family with whom Ken had been venturing into closing and merging a big business deal with.

The young girl looked up, while waiting, eyes set on a big blow-up screen on one of the other buildings across the business district. Models, ramping down the catwalk in fashion and couture, designer clothes, custom style hair, and make-up; camera lights popping and flashing, as the men and women were strutting down the long catwalk.

"I want to do that!" She pointed out to her father, whose beeper, back then, went off every so often, even as he was busy talking on the phone, at the same time, his attention divided between his child and keeping the family business up.

"That's nice, Drew.. Uh, yes that’s not a problem.. No, we're on the way.. We'll meet you soon.." He commented and quickly went back to his call, stressed.

Drew was always used to being ignored by her father, for a typical attention-seeking daughter of Aphrodite, her lack of attention was usually just substituted by getting all the material and unnecessary luxuries. In other words, Drew got whatever she wanted, just like a spoiled brat. The young demigod got anything she wanted, especially with the special and rare gift of charmspeak - which back then, no one, not even herself, knew she possessed.

Ten-year-old Drew repeatedly and annoyingly tugged on her father's sleeve.

"Dad, you're not even looking! Look!" She pointed up at the screen, fixed on the building before them. This time, Ken Tanaka broke away from his cellphone, finally ending the long call with his business partner, Nick; listening as Drew demanded, with a hint of charmspeak that was natural in her voice. His gaze fixed on the fashion show that was currently being streamed and cast on the big city screen. Drew's light brown eyes twinkled; she had even made it a point to mimic and copy one of the models, by striking her own pose. Ken took one look at his daughter and back at the ad that displayed at the end of the video for Vogue; they were offering modelling workshops. He chuckled and bent down to meet at eye level with Drew, patting her head, and tucking a loose strand of her long, soft curled, wavy hair behind her ear.

"Really, it's nice Drew. But I don't think you need this modeling workshop.. It's a waste of money.. Besides, we're meeting the Youngs and-" Ken was cut off by the next ring of his phone and he stepped away from his daughter to take the call.

At first, Drew felt disheartened, it was rare that her father would even spend time with her and still, work was more important. Drew shook her head. She had overheard her father close millions of dollars worth of deals over the phone and in the meetings. She may have been tagged as shallow, materialistic, and so much more by her tutors and the few other kids that would come by, having almost everything, or not. But she was still clever enough and determined to get something she wanted, especially if she had her mind set to it.

Later, as they drove away, Drew had looked back at the blow up screen, already imagining herself in place of the model walking down the runway. They met the Young's and Ken and Nick were actually discussing investment opportunities, at a table with special refreshments set for herself and young Collin Young, whom she never really acknowledged, while she was quietly plotting in her mind. The boy never took his eyes off of her and a small smirk grew on her face. Nick had just suggested an arranged marriage between Drew and his son, Collin, by the time they were of age. Back then, she was too young to fully understand that she was practically being betrothed and used as part of a business deal by their Asian custom.

By the end of the meeting, Ken had properly gone up to Drew and had given her a wrapped object, a vintage pocket mirror. Even back then, Drew had learned to fake a smile and just accept the gift, not exactly understanding she had been arranged to marry the boy in the future. Of course, the girl was fascinated by the "gift," but her short attention span and scheme in mind had her distracted.

While Ken had been once again, distracted by his business calls, Drew had pulled her own strings, easily and effortlessly convincing one of her father's assistants, with the gift of persuasion of course, ones who had usually attended to her and acquired a cell phone. A pink Motorola Razr V3. As a demigod, she wasn't even supposed to have one, but back then, she hadn't known any better and it was another thing her father had never let her have..

"I'll get what I want, you'll see."

The girl was no daughter of Athena, but she was able to come up with her own plan. She had gathered her essentials, stuffing clothes, shoes, teddy bears, the cellphone, and all things she thought she would need in a small backpack, and the mirror she had gotten, kept in her dress pocket.

Drew easily snuck out and climbed into a taxi cab, alone, unaware, unarmed, and unprotected. She found herself back in the same business district streets, though by then, the area was now considered shady. The girl glanced back up at the screen, still playing the ad. She reached in her pocket to look for the phone and found the mirror, remembering the cellphone was in her bag. She took one look at her reflection, (oblivious to the hidden purpose of the mirror,) and hid it back in her pocket.

Soon, she found herself wandering into an abandoned building, with a view of the electronic billboard. Little did she know, the supposed abandoned building had been infested with monsters, and she was being followed. The building had once been an office so she found herself settled at one of the desks while waiting. Waiting for anyone or her father to realize her absence, which she doubted would happen, given her father's focus on his job if not attention grabbed by more work.

Drew felt an odd feeling of being closely watched but dismissed it, more focused on her plan. When she next checked the time on her heart shaped charm watch, she decided she had been gone long enough for at least her father's assistant to notice her absence. The child of Aphrodite dug into her backpack for the clamshell cellphone, finding her father's private office and study number on speed dial.

With a push of a button, she could hear the ringing.

Ring, ring, ring, ring.

It rang about four, no, five times before the call was connected.

The girl held the gadget to her ear, a stupid move for a demigod, broadcasting her scent and voice for monsters to easily locate. What was worse was she was in a building, inhabited by telkhines and other monsters alike. A woman's voice, sounding obviously stressed had answered. It was Sharlene, her father's personal assistant.

"Tanaka Residencce.." The smirk on Drew's face grew at the smooth flow of her plan.

'Perfect- she's the easier to fool!' She thought and held the cell phone away to cough lightly and try her best impression of a fake voice.

"We have the girl. Tell the businessman if he wishes to see her again, prepare 7 Million Dollars - wait for details on the trading point."

Over the phone, she could hear Ken Tanaka asking who was on the line with Nick chiming in to get the other's attention back on the business plan. Drew could tell by the sounds over the phone, Sharlene had begun to panic.

Drew hung up and laughed to herself in triumph, coughing lightly as her fake voice irritated her throat.

"My plan is working." She told herself. Drew continued to feel as if she were being watched. Little did she know, Collin had somehow been spying on her and sharing everything with his father. She turned around with her own suspicions, oblivious to other monsters lurking in the building. She was only lucky that the call did not cause a frenzy for monsters with her scent. The girl flipped the phone again and dialed once more. When Sharlene had answered again, Drew only added an impatient deadline.

"Bring the money before midnight by Fifth Ave. No authorities." She added. Using the phone again, her demigod scent and location were given away and monsters were starting to flock each floor.

When Drew heard sirens sounding, that alone told her that her plan worked. Now she only needed an escape plan and how to get her own ransom money. Drew thought that doing this would prove her father wrong and he did have enough money to send her to the exclusive workshop and so she could just pursue the career on her own.

Meanwhile, at the Tanaka residence, Ken Tanaka had indeed prepared the 7 million dollars borrowing the money that was supposed to be for the business closing from Nick Young.

"I'm sorry this is happening, Tanaka.. I've called all my connections to help search for your daughter.." Nick volunteered, although his intention wasn't more for concern for the girl but for his own security with their company merger and his son's supposed fiancée. Collin on the other hand, was very much aware. He just stood there quietly and nonchalantly, already knowing Drew's plan. He and his father were already countering her efforts.

'She is such a brat.' The boy thought and chuckled to himself. He waited and watched, quite entertained with what was happening. Soon, they were informed that rescue operations were sent out to scout the location.

At the site, it was dark. Drew checked her watch.

"It's about time.." She told herself and pulled the pocket mirror, only to check her reflection and make herself look a little roughed up to make her ‘kidnapping’ at least believable.

"Drew, you could be an actress!" She told herself, clapping once in triumph that her plot to kidnap herself for ransom was 'working.' She flipped her cellphone for yet another call. Just as she was about to hit the speed dial, she felt as if she were being watched closely again. Monsters were already so close to finding her and it was highly possible for any of them to pick up on her scent. The lights she had on went out and then she thought she was starting to hear things.

"Girl, you really chose to look for trouble." Drew stopped to look around, searching for the voice she had just heard. She shrugged it off, thinking she was only hearing things. Just as she pushed the speed dial button, the call tone began to connect and ring, something or someone slammed into the girl, knocking the cellphone out of Drew's hands and it sent the gadget out of the window which smashed onto the pavement 17 stories below from where she hid.

"Oh come on!" Drew cursed through gritted teeth, sitting herself up as she had been knocked down by her attacker.

"Who the h-" The girl's next words were muffled by a hand held over her mouth. Someone or something had captured her.

"Shh.. Girl, it's really not safe here. Gods, of all the crazies I've seen.." It was Kimmy, her au pair, apparently Ken Tanaka had hired her as her protector who seemed to have been part of the rescue team too. She shook her head, pulling the girl to the side, just as a telkhine climbed in, sniffing about and picking up Drew's scent.

"Stupid move, girl.. Stupid! Come on! Let's just get out of here before they actually find and attack us!"

Kimmy had drawn her own celestial bronze dagger and before Drew could even protest, she had been stealthily dragged down flights of stairs. On the way down, the girl struggled against her captor's hold.

"How dare you touch me! You ruined it! My plan!" She struggled trying to break free of her protector's hold - by the time they were out of the abandoned building and as soon as the girl was back on her feet, she turned to glaring and partly crying at Kimmy, disappointed that her plan had been foiled.

In seconds, Ken Tanaka, Nick and Collin Young along with many more people and other authorities had crowded around the girl. When Drew's father had asked who the kidnapper was, the disguised satyr frowned and could have kept her silence but reported anyway.

"The Kidnapper is also the Kidnap Victim." Of course, Mr. Tanaka stood shocked and disappointed. Collin, knowingly snorted, crossing his arms before his chest.

Later, Collin confronted Drew with a knowing smirk on his face.

"What are you smirking for?" The girl asked, quirking a brow at the boy who just circled her then whispered behind her ear.

"I know what you did. All of it. I wonder how you will be when we're married. What would you do just to get my attention?" He said in a cocky fashion, winking. It took seconds for the girl to process what the boy had just said before reacting violently.

"WHAT?!"

Drew was too focused on getting what she wanted. She did something stupid in the process and it was too late for her to actually realize, that she had been betrothed.

Now, Ken Tanaka was making arrangements for Drew to stay at Camp Half-Blood. Unknown to Drew, she was another child he was shipping off to keep safe for their future.
